Bucks for Science Blogs: Announcing the Subscription Revenue Sharing Program
...
Thanks to the generous support of our readers, Seeds of Science turned a profit in 2024 for the first time in our short but illustrious history. This is a problem for us however because, while not technically/legally a non-profit, we are committed to a “no-profit” model. We have decided that the simplest way to solve this “problem” is to redistribute all of our subscription revenue to the authors we feature on the Best of Science Blogging feed.
Here is how it will work. Each article counts as one “share”. If we post 60 articles in 2025 and two of them are yours, then you are entitled to 1/30th of our subscription revenue (the profits from 2024 will be rolled over and included in the pool for 2025). At the end of the year, we will distribute the money, and then do it all over again in 2026 (and for every year after that until the heat death of the universe).
Support SoS, Support Science Bloggers
For 2025, we will offer the following:
$8 dollars for a monthly subscription
$75 for an annual subscription
$150 for a founding member subscription (you may also choose to pay anything between $75 and $150)
To be crystal clear, the purchase of a paid subscription is simply a donation to the science bloggers featured on SoS—nothing more, nothing less. We have never paywalled any content and never will (paywalls are against our religion), and paid subscribers will receive absolutely no perks or benefits (other than the warm fuzzy feeling that comes with knowing you are one of the good guys).
There are a few non-financial ways in which you can support us.
Spread the word! Share this post (and the journal) with your friends, family, colleagues, lovers, haters, enemies, etc.
Submit your blog posts! Just shoot us an DM/email and we will tell you what we think. You don't have to be on Substack, but there is an additional benefit if you are—we typically trade recommendations with the authors we publish.
If you have any questions, ideas, criticisms, etc., you can comment below, slide in our DMs, or reach out to us at info@theseedsofscience.org.
Are you sure you want to make this commitment forever? Interesting projects can arise, and the money could be spent on them.
I tell you more: this is like a high dividend firm: returning cash means that not profitable projects are expected…
