With apologies that I don't have time to give this the thorough examination it deserves, I would point out that pronouns are surprisingly unnecessary for a lot of communication. In interactions within a small band of people, context almost always makes the subject obvious. For example, modern Japanese avoids pronouns altogether (and I seem to remember that the 1sg 私 is a relatively new innovation)
