Only when I saw the word “antiscorbutic” in this article did I realize that ascorbic acid got its name because “ascorbic” means “without scurvy”.

One reason why mathematics has frequently been a vehicle to travel a path out of epistemic hell may have been because it allows people to focus attention on functional relations while setting aside the dreamworld of our narrative fixation on meaning.

Math with its focus on the functional relations of “mechanical” systems and mechanisms draws on the intuitions of the cerebellum, the seat of tool-using skills, while the frontal cortex is enjoying the emotional drama and meaning of myth and narratives of intentional cause-and-effect.

Math and mechanism is how astrology became astronomy and alchemy became chemistry.
